Voice Evaluation and Treatment

Have you noticed changes to the quality, pitch, or loudness of your voice? Voice disorders can result from various diagnoses, including changes to the vocal folds, neurological disorders, vocal tension, respiratory difficulties, and aging.

Common symptoms of voice disorders include:

✔ Hoarseness
✔ Breathy or weak-sounding voice
✔ Strain or increased effort when speaking
✔ Vocal fatigue
✔ Difficulty being heard
✔ Chronic cough or throat-clearing

Swallowing Evaluation and Treatment

Symptoms

✔ Foods, liquids, or pills feeling “stuck” when swallowing
✔ Foods or liquids “going down the wrong pipe”
✔ Frequent coughing or throat clearing during meals
✔ Weight loss and reduced consumption of meals
✔ Regurgitation or the sensation of foods/liquids “coming back up” after eating/drinking
✔ Recurrent lung infections or aspiration pneumonia.

Clinical Swallow Evaluation

Information is gathered about the nature of the swallowing problem and the impact it has on mealtime and quality of life. A standardized assessment is performed, including an oral mechanism examination to assess the integrity and function of certain muscles and nerves of the head and neck.

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

FEES is an instrumental evaluation of swallowing that utilizes a small, flexible endoscope with a camera passed through the nose and into the back of the throat. It allows for visualization of the pharynx, larynx, and upper esophageal opening. The patient is then provided with items to eat and drink to assess swallow function.
